Henry Gardner (American/Know-Nothing) is elected governor of Massachusetts.

November 15, 1854

A merchant and resident of Jones Hill, Gardner is the candidate of the newly established party, which wins all of the state’s Constitutional offices and all but a few seats in the legislature in what author Lawrence Lader calls “the most remarkable landslide in Massachusetts history.” Gardner is reelected every year until 1857.*
